In November of 1966, in anticipation of our new building which was designed to provide a comprehensive youth program, an outline was developed to envision the kind of youth activities to make the church the very center of our young people’s lives in our community. We believe "that it is in the fellowship of the Christian Church that our youth will find the very finest and happiest way of life". On May 5, 1967, the St. Matthew Youth Center, "The Matts", opened its doors. Two thousand thirteen will be the center's 46th year of community service.
The "The Matts" is open to students in grades 6 through 12 from mid September to the end of May, sometimes being extended into June. There is a yearly $5.00 membership fee. The hours are Wednesdays and Thursdays, 7:00-9:00 PM and Fridays, 7:00-10:00 PM. Activities include: basketball, ping pong, pool tables, air hockey, foosball, arcade games, snack bar, Wii and TV lounge. Also the youth will be able to earn free money for the food bar by memorizing Bible verses, participate in monthly Birthday celebrations, talk about relevant topics impacting youth today and tying these topics into Bible scripture during weekly "Halftimes" and on the third (3rd) Thursday, the center opens one hour earlier for Club Nights Bible Study which consist of a walk through the memorable stories of the Bible starting at the very beginning and ending with the crucifixion of Jesus. Meals are provided on Club Nights by St. Matthew volunteers.
The supervising staff are members of St. Matthew. They provide a safe environment, Bible Study leadership, tutoring and Christian friendship. For forty-six years, the center has offered a place for young people to gather with other young people: a joyous Christian atmosphere, for recreation, fellowship and social activities.
