MAY I SEE YOUR ID?
At a cashier or check out counter, at the security checkpoints of an airport, at a bank, and on many other occasions of life, we are asked to produce some identification usually a driver’s license or some other form of “government issued photo identification.” This card or document is designed to prove to another that we are who we say we are.
Jesus asked his disciples a similar question: “Who do people say that I am?” (Matthew 16; Mark 8, Luke 9) Jesus didn't need their answer to the question any more than he needs our answer.
It is more important for us to know who we are and therefore whose we are. The Bible study leader, Dr. Walter Taylor of Trinity Seminary, Columbus Ohio, pushed this point to us pastors at the Moving Forward in Christ event held November 1-2 in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
So who are you, who am I? As Christians, we are God’s people. Our IDentity is in Jesus, for we are baptized into his death and resurrection. That’s good news!
As we go through life, with all its joys and challenges, it’s really helpful for us to keep remembering our ID, who we are, the baptized children of God. A promise and a title that stays with us in life and even death!
