Confirmation Ministries

In the Lutheran Christian tradition, many of us are baptized as infants. In that moment, we are promised that we are a part of the family of God’s beloved children; we are a part of Christ’s body, broken and reborn for the sake of God’s love for the world; and we are promised that nothing can take away the claim that God has made on us. But baptism is not primarily about that moment; it is about how the rest of our lives are lived in response to that moment.

As Christians wrestle with that response in our lives, there are many challenges along the way. Here enters the ministry of catechism, also known as confirmation, or instruction for the affirmation of baptism.

Basically, catechism (from a Greek word for “teach”) comes at a point in a young person’s life when every aspect of their world is changing, and seeks to walk with them in supportive, faithful ways through that period in order to equip them in Christian faith for living the rest of their lives. It is not the end of faith development, but it is a critical component at a formational time. Catechism seeks to engage developing hearts and minds with some of the basics of Christian faith (sacraments, scripture, worship, history, prayer) in ways that we just mentally and spiritually couldn’t do as young children, so that as we enter young adulthood we are prepared to engage life in this world as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
